Dear Friends,
In the face of ongoing uncertainty surrounding Scranton’s hospital system, the Scranton Area Community Foundation and our funding partners have taken decisive action to help stabilize health care access and protect our community.
Regional Hospital of Scranton and its Moses Taylor campus—both owned by Community Health Systems (CHS)—are in a period of transition. Last summer, CHS attempted to sell the hospitals, but the transaction did not move forward. Since then, the Scranton Area Community Foundation has been at the table with state leaders, local legislators, and regional funding partners to help avert closure and chart a sustainable path forward.
Thanks to your generosity and the visionary leadership of our dedicated Board of Governors, the Scranton Area Community Foundation has provided essential funding that has enabled the hospitals to remain open, sustain patient care, and protect hundreds of local jobs during this time of transition. These funds have helped ensure that doctors, nurses, and hospital staff can continue their vital work caring for patients without interruption. This critical support—along with contributions from other local foundations and funding partners—has ensured continuity for patients, families, and health care professionals as stakeholders work toward a sustainable future for the hospitals.
This unprecedented collaboration among funders, public leaders, and community partners reflects the best of what philanthropy can do—moving quickly, boldly, and in unison for the good of our entire region. It demonstrates how, when we act together with clarity and compassion, we can safeguard essential care and support the health and economic security of our region.
We are proud to stand alongside a committed group of partners working thoughtfully and urgently to uphold community well-being during this time of real challenge. This is progress made possible by collaboration, commitment, and the belief that everyone deserves access to quality care. Our gratitude goes to the Foundation’s dedicated Board of Governors, our dedicated funding partners, and other local leaders helping to guide this effort with purpose and integrity.
While this work is far from over, we remain committed to doing our part to protect essential care and support the well-being of our community as stakeholders work toward a sustainable solution. Moments like these underscore one of the most important purposes of a community foundation: to stand ready when our community needs us.
Thank you for standing with us. Your support is making a real difference.
With gratitude,
