Alexis Caviston-Ashmar Memorial Scholarship Fund hosting ‘Va-Lex-Tine’s Day’ Cheesecake Fundraiser
The Alexis Caviston-Ashmar Memorial Scholarship Fund is holding a cheesecake fundraiser to celebrate Alexis ‘Lexi’ Caviston-Ashmar’s birthday and Valentine’s Day. All cheesecakes purchased through this fundraiser will benefit the Alexis-Caviston Ashmar Memorial Scholarship Fund, administered by the Scranton Area Community Foundation.
Orders must be placed and paid in full by February 3, 2024.

Garden of Cedar now accepting Valentine’s inscriptions
The Garden of Cedar, an urban community garden and park located at 715 Cedar Avenue in Scranton, is now accepting Valentine’s inscriptions to “plant” in the garden for Valentine’s Day.
From Garden of Cedar’s Facebook page: To “plant” your heart in the Garden please email your Valentine message to scrantonheart2024@gmail.com. First names only. No last names please. Follow these directions and your Valentine will soon find its way to the Garden of Cedar. Multiple Valentine messages are welcome. Pictured are some examples. Also, please tell us where you are from. Help us demonstrate the effect our little Garden has beyond our community. Scranton has heart! Scranton is Romantic!
The Garden of Cedar officially opened in June 2023 and is a unique public space for residents of South Scranton and the Greater Scranton Area.
Frank Dubas, President of The Garden of Cedar, donated the property and established The Garden of Cedar Capital Fund at the Scranton Area Community Foundation in 2018 to support the creation and development of the notable community garden.
Since its opening, the Garden has harvested many garden vegetables and greens for the neighborhood. During the planting season, 25 garden spots were allocated to neighborhood families, area public schools, and local community organizations. Several master gardeners and neighborhood businesses cultivated spots welcoming those without opportunity to garden to pick healthy vegetables as needed. Additionally, the Garden has hosted many community events including a holiday event in December where toys were distributed to neighborhood children and a summer event when the Garden partnered with Indigo Spoon Foundation, Weinberg Food Pantry, and DePietro’s Pharmacy to provide 687 lunches, 4,729 pounds of food, and 100 school backpacks to neighbors and people in need.
This year, the Garden of Cedar will continue its signature events and programs during the planting season and throughout the year. To make this possible Garden of Cedar is looking to fund future operations, construct a functional welcoming entrance on Cedar Avenue in Scranton, and design and build a storage shed with an attached greenhouse. The Greater Scranton MLK Commission celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
On Sunday, January 14th, the Greater Scranton MLK Commission hosted an annual dinner to celebrate the life, legacy, and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Hosted at the University of Scranton’s Patrick and Margaret DeNaples Center, the MLK Day Annual Celebration brought together community members from various backgrounds to hear from speakers and learn about community initiatives and projects focusing on the celebration’s 2024 theme: Still I Rise.
The event featured keynote speaker Sara Solfanelli, Esq. A Scranton native, Atty. Solfanelli is Special Counsel for Pro Bono Initiatives at Schulte Roth & Zabel, and serves as a part of the SRZ Tulsa Race Massacre Litigation Team.

The Greater Scranton MLK Commission Fund at the Scranton Area Community Foundation is a donor-advised fund that supports the charitable works and activities of the Greater Scranton MLK Commission. Through the fund, the Greater Scranton MLK Commission seeks to support its mission through projects and programs designed to promote principles of nonviolence, equity, and love through education and service.

2024 Wilderness Fund Scholarship now accepting applications!
The Wilderness Fund scholarship provides high school students an opportunity to participate in an Outward Bound Expedition program.
WHAT IS THE SCHOLARSHIP?
The scholarship provides the full tuition cost (up to $5,000) plus travel expenses for a student to participate in an Outward Bound program, the leading provider of outdoor education programs that allow young people to explore their personal potential.
Expeditions include backpacking trips, mountaineering trips, whitewater rafting trips, canoeing trips, dog sledding expeditions, sailing trips and many other offerings.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Students in grades 9-12 from Scranton, West Scranton, Riverside, Old Forge, Mid Valley, and Valley View high schools are eligible to apply for this unique opportunity.
HOW TO APPLY?
Applications are accepted via our online scholarship portal from now until February 25, 2024.
The Wilderness Fund was established in 1998 by an anonymous donor with the belief that all children need the opportunity to see the world, explore nature, and discover themselves along the way. Every year since its creation, the fund has provided several students with a scholarship to participate in the Outward Bound program.
2024 Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation Careers in Care Nursing Scholarship
From now until March 1st, 2024, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation is accepting applications for the Careers in Career Nursing scholarship opportunity.
Established in 2021, this competitive nursing scholarship program aims to support the growth and development of the nursing workforce in NEPA.
Students and healthcare workers in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wyoming Counties who plan to pursue, or who are pursuing, nursing and who will practice in Northeastern Pennsylvania may apply for this scholarship.
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the people of the region and particularly those most vulnerable and most underserved of the population.
